WattOS is the new OS based on Ubuntu 10.04. It is a lightweight and low power using OS.  It is said to work well with the less powerful hardware.

A low power using OS with Linux in its background, makes you think that it will come with some poor interface and softwares which might not work in the way they are meant too. However, WattOS runs some of the most popular softwares such as Firefox 3.6 which we already know that some of the older machines struggle to run. Empathy is another software which is for Messaging. Some of the applications available on WattOS are:

    1. Abiword for Word Processing

    2. GNumeric for Spreadsheets

    3. Rythmbox

    4. Totem Player

    5. Gwibber for micro-blogging

WattOS has an interface which is good from the usability point of view. WattOS uses Openbox and LXDE for desktop environment. The combination works well both in speed of applications and keeping it lightweight.

In terms of performance, you can check how fast it is from the live CD. It works well with low hardware configurations desktops. As for the Power saving features, it comes with its own power management application which needs little tweaks to configure. You need to configure it manually.

The best thing about WattOS is that it combines best of both the worlds, it is both speedy and supports older machines. Which makes it an excellent choice of OS.

The Tag line “We are colorful and curious…Just like you” portrays what Bing is meant to be. The truth is that I have not used much of Bing – the Search Engine.  The day when I first saw bing, I thought this is just a old search engine with a jazzy background. Well to most extent it might be true also. Bing has focused on creating a visually good search engine and organizing the results in the categories which are most popular such as images, videos etc.

And then I came across Discover Bing. Bing has improved a lot capabilities. You can see a marked difference in its image search, travel, entertainment and maps. If you are searching for “football” on bing images, you can see a lot of related searches such as “football field”, “football”, “football player”. You can narrow down your results for size, layout and even color of the image, which is pretty cool.

Shopping section allows to search for gift ideas or a gift category. If you are searching for health related queries, bing gives you full fledged articles on your query.

Overall, I must say Bing has improved a lot. Even though it may be due to addition of capabilities of Google or Yahoo.

Youtube has introduced a cloud based video editor. However this is a basic editing system, it is a great new addition to youtube.

It allows you to trim videos, combine multiple videos which makes it very useful to the users.

The great things is its easy interface. You can drag your videos to the strip at the bottom. As soon as you drop the video on the strip, you get a scissors icon. This allows you to trim your video. The videos you can edit are ofcourse yours only to avoid any copyright issues. You can then click save. Saving is pretty fast as the videos are already uploaded in the server. Results however do take some to get processed.

This may be helpful for people like me who do not want to take the pain of editing videos and then upload.

Other features like tagging, labeling and sharing are still there.

Android team from Google has been working a great deal since it released its platform in 2008. The gingerbread release promises to focus on much needed user interface. We all might have seen or experienced the great look and feel of iPhone and must be wondering when others will catch up. Since the time of it’s release user experience has not changed much however a lot of features were added.

This is going to change with the new release. A lot of mobile manufacturers wanted to add their own UI layer but failed most of the times.

Google is focusing most of its efforts on the UI in this release. However you would wonder that since the Android is a flexible platform and is designed to handle multiple hardware, will it make it possible to create a perfect UI as iPhone? With google, you can certainly expect this. And hopefully they wont lock down the hardware as iPhone did.
